The 2009–10 Premier League (known as the Barclays Premier League for sponsorship reasons) is the current season of the Premier League and the eighteenth since its establishment in 1992. A total of 20 teams are competing in the league, with Manchester United the defending champions.[2][3] The season began with a match between Chelsea and Hull City on 15 August 2009 with Chelsea winning 2–1 at Stamford Bridge. Hull's Stephen Hunt scored the opening goal of the Premier League season on his competitive debut for the club. The league season is scheduled to end on 9 May 2010.[4] The fixture list was announced on 17 June.[5] Prior to each opening week match, a minute's applause was held in memory of Sir Bobby Robson's passing. For the first time in the Premier League's history, there were no draws on the opening day.
